The flight cancellation saga to Israel is in full swing, with many Israelis stranded abroad, still unsure when they’ll be able to return home. Despite the uncertainty, many of theses stranded individuals remain optimistic, making the best of the situation and understanding the circumstances that led to it.

“‘We landed in New Jersey on Friday to spend Shabbat with a friend’s family after a month and a half in Canada,” says Maor, whose flight was postponed.

“We were supposed to fly with the Italian airline ITA, but unfortunately, the company postponed the flight to next Wednesday following the successful strike in Lebanon. Although the airline did not assist in finding alternative options, we are managing and staying optimistic, believing that this situation will change soon.”

Maor took advantage of the situation to explore New York a bit more:

“Yesterday, while walking around Times Square, we met other Israelis who also remain positive, saying everything will be fine and believing this wave is just temporary.”

“We received extra time as a gift.” said Chaim, who like Maor, is also stuck in the United States.

“Even though the flight was canceled, we tried to stay in good spirits. We used this unexpected ‘gift of time’ to do a bit more sightseeing. The cancellation was initially disappointing, but of course, we understand the importance of the security events that led to the situation.”

“The Israelis here help lift each other’s spirits,” says Chaim. “The local community is also incredibly supportive, making our stay much more comfortable.”

“The owner of a ready-made food store in New York heard we were stuck for Shabbat and gave us a Shabbat meal on the house. It’s amazing to see the community’s support here.”

In addition, Israel’s aviation sector shows encouraging signs of recovery, with foreign and local airlines gradually resuming operations. The Greek airline Aegean plans to resume flights to Tel Aviv, Etihad is upgrading its aircraft to Israel, and Israeli airlines like El Al, Arkia, and Israir are working towards returning to normal operations. Ben Gurion Airport is returning to full activity after a period of flight diversions to alternative airports, signaling positive progress in recovery from recent security challenges and providing hope for the stable continuation of air traffic in Israel.
