In September 2024, an extraordinary maritime rescue operation prevented an environmental catastrophe when an international rescue team saved an oil tanker targeted by Houthi missiles and drones. The tanker, which was at risk of spilling massive amounts of crude oil into the Red Sea, was salvaged in a high-risk mission under constant threat of missile fire.

150,000 Tons of Crude Oil Nearly Spilled

The Greek tanker MT Saunion, carrying 150,000 tons of crude oil, was nearly the center of an unprecedented environmental disaster. In August, the vessel was hit by missile fire and explosive drones launched by Houthi rebels, igniting a massive fire and raising fears of a significant oil spill into the Red Sea. The ship’s crew evacuated, and an international maritime rescue mission—the largest of its kind—was launched to avert the disaster.

In September, after three weeks of intense efforts, European Union rescue teams successfully pumped the oil from the burning tanker and towed it, using seven vessels, to Egyptian shores. The operation, conducted under the constant threat of Houthi missile attacks, involved over 200 participants, six private companies, and naval forces from multiple nations.

“A Tremendous Relief”

“We feel tremendous relief that we were able to prevent a devastating environmental disaster,” said Greek Maritime Minister Christos Stylianides. “This was a complex and dangerous mission, but the outcome is truly gratifying.” Greece appealed for international assistance and even sought guarantees from the Houthis not to target the rescue operation. Athens emphasized Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in the rescue effort, which contributed to improved relations between the two countries. This collaboration paved the way for Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s visit to Riyadh this week.
