Despite the state of emergency in Ukraine’s capital and the ongoing security threats, the Jewish community in Kyiv has spent recent days fully preparing for the holiday of Shavuot.
This year, the public reading of the Ten Commandments will take place at multiple sites throughout the city. The goal is to allow as many Jews as possible to participate in the giving of the Torah—while keeping everyone safe amid continued drone attacks.
Food Packages for Jewish Inmates
The city’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Jonathan Markovitch, is leading efforts that reach well beyond synagogue walls. In his role as rabbi of the Ukrainian prison service, he arranged for food packages to be sent to Jewish inmates. These included traditional dairy dishes, explanatory materials about the holiday, and Torah lessons delivered inside the prisons.

At the same time, festive care packages were sent to Jewish soldiers on the frontlines. These included cheesecake, special combat rations for the holiday, and booklets explaining the meaning of Shavuot.
According to Rabbi Markovitch, “Our preparations for the holiday of receiving the Torah—from the reading of the Ten Commandments at various locations throughout the city to the support we provide for soldiers and inmates—reflect the solidarity and mutual responsibility that characterize the Jewish community.” He added that this activity proves “the Torah and Jewish tradition are alive and present everywhere, in every situation.”

In advance of the holiday, the community is also working on a social and humanitarian level—distributing aid packages to thousands of needy individuals, elderly residents, and people living alone across the city. In these uncertain times, the Jewish community in Kyiv stands as a beacon of continuity, mutual support, and the enduring light of Jewish tradition amid a challenging reality.
