The Trump administration is continuing its firm stance against Harvard University. Overnight (Monday to Tuesday), the U.S. Department of Education informed the university that all federal grants would be frozen until it complies with the administration’s demands. According to the statement, the freeze includes research grants and other financial assistance totaling approximately $1 billion, which will remain suspended until Harvard’s leadership “demonstrates responsible management,” in the Department’s words.

Sharp accusations against the university
In an official letter sent by Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to Harvard’s administration, the Department leveled a series of sharp criticisms against the institution. The administration accused Harvard of fostering antisemitism on campus, maintaining race-based admissions and hiring policies, and having a notable lack of conservative faculty. “This letter is intended to clarify that Harvard is no longer eligible to request federal grants,” wrote McMahon, implying the freeze could be indefinite.

Move may lead to revocation of tax-exempt status
The decision comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the administration and U.S. academic institutions, particularly amid pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campuses. Some of these protests have involved violence and accusations of incitement against Jews and Israelis. The Trump administration had previously announced the suspension of $2.2 billion earmarked for Harvard and expressed its intention to revoke the university’s tax-exempt status.

Harvard’s president previously stated that the institution would not yield to political pressure from the White House. In response to recent developments, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, accusing Harvard of being “a far-left antisemitic university,” adding: “Revoking their tax-exempt status is exactly what they deserve.”
