How American Pilots Helped Stop a Catastrophe Over Israel

For the first time, U.S. fighter pilots describe in their own words the night hundreds of missiles were launched at Israel | “We worked shoulder to shoulder with the Israelis, the British, the French, and the Jordanians,” said one pilot.

On April 13, 2024, Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel in a direct and unprecedented attack. The assault, dubbed “The True Promise” by the Iranians, included roughly 185 suicide drones, between 110 and 130 ballistic missiles, and approximately 36 cruise missiles.

Large-scale defense operation led by Israel and supported by regional allies
In response, a large-scale defensive operation was launched, led by the IDF with support from a regional coalition that included the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Jordan. During the operation, Israel’s air defense systems—alongside foreign fighter jets—intercepted approximately 99% of the incoming threats.

“We got the call in the middle of the night,” said one U.S. Air Force pilot who took part in the operation. “It was immediately clear—this wasn’t a drill. This was war. Every pilot understood exactly what was at stake.”

Only a few missiles struck inside Israel
The attack triggered global concern, but the coordinated response prevented a major disaster. All of the drones and cruise missiles were intercepted outside Israeli airspace. Most of the ballistic missiles were destroyed in the air or failed during launch. Only a few missiles made it through, causing minor damage. A 7-year-old girl from the Bedouin community was seriously injured.

“We reached the area within minutes,” said another pilot. “Waves of threats were pouring in toward Israel. We had to respond with complete precision and coordination. We worked shoulder to shoulder with the Israelis, the British, the French, and the Jordanians. It was truly a global mission.”

“Yes, we were afraid,” added another pilot. “But fear doesn’t stop you. You fly. You fight. And you know—you’ve saved lives. That’s what matters.”
