Israeli security forces thwarted a combined terror attack in Jerusalem, planned by a terrorist from East Jerusalem. According to a police statement today (Sunday), the terrorist, in his 20s, had prepared pipe bombs and purchased knives with the intent to carry out an attack during the month of Ramadan.

Over the past month, a joint investigation by the police and the Shin Bet began, following up on intelligence received about intentions to carry out attacks in several forms: placing a pipe bomb in central areas of Jerusalem, and a combined car-ramming and stabbing attack targeting Jews or security forces in the city.

Plan: Explosives on the Jerusalem Light Rail
The terrorist, a resident of Shuafat, was arrested by detectives from the Jerusalem District. During his interrogation, it was revealed that he had planned to place explosives on the Jerusalem light rail, on a bus, or in a restaurant in the city’s south. He had begun learning how to build pipe bombs and obtained the necessary materials, including pipes and matchboxes.

After several weeks, the terrorist altered his plan and chose to carry out a combined attack using a vehicle and knives. He purchased a car, began driving lessons, and bought large knives in preparation for the attack. In the days leading up to Ramadan, he resolved to carry out the attack at a bus stop at a major intersection in Jerusalem, intending to stab victims after the ramming.

Quranic Verses as Inspiration
Israel Police and the Shin Bet uncovered the terrorist’s intentions and successfully foiled the attack before it could be carried out. The investigation revealed that the attacker aspired to become a “shahid” (martyr) and listened to Quranic verses to motivate himself to carry out the attack.

At the conclusion of the investigation, an indictment was filed against him, and he is expected to stand trial at the Jerusalem’s Magistrate Court. The Israel Police and Shin Bet emphasized their continued commitment to act decisively against all terrorist threats and pledged to keep combating attempted attacks in all forms.
