In recent days, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and the Israel Police successfully thwarted a “major” shooting attack that was planned to take place at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem during the month of Ramadan.

As part of a joint operation, detectives from the Coastal District’s Crime Fighting Unit, along with Special Patrol Unit (Yasam) officers, arrested Udai Mubasham, from northern Israel, who, according to the investigation, had planned to open fire on police officers and Jewish civilians.

According to findings from the Shin Bet and police investigation, Mubasham had acquired an illegal firearm and practiced shooting in preparation for the attack. He was ideologically motivated by identification with the Palestinian struggle and sought to retaliate in the event that Muslim prayer at the Temple Mount would be restricted during Ramadan.

Additionally, he attempted to recruit others to assist in carrying out the attack. The handgun intended for the attack was eventually found in the possession of his brother, who was also arrested.

A senior Shin Bet official emphasized: “This prevention was significant, such an attack, had it been carried out, could have triggered a dangerous security escalation in Jerusalem.”

Following the investigation, an indictment was filed against Mubasham and his brother by the Haifa District Prosecutor’s Office.
