Over the past few months, Israeli police conducted a covert investigation targeting a group of criminals who extorted tens of thousands of shekels from a northern businessman after he fired his housekeeper. The criminals threatened to harm him and his family if he did not comply. Fearing for his life, the victim paid over 40,000 shekels through various means, including app transfers and cash payments.

The investigation, initiated by the northern district police following the victim’s report, traced the suspects: one residing in Jerusalem and another in Nazareth. As part of the operation, investigators monitored the victim’s interactions with the extortionists, leading to a scheduled meeting in a northern city where the victim was supposed to hand over a cash-filled envelope containing 25,000 shekels.

On the day of the money transfer, northern district officers, central unit detectives, and Border Police operatives were positioned at multiple locations across the country. As the victim handed the envelope to the courier, the courier was immediately apprehended. Simultaneously, law enforcement moved to the suspects’ homes, arresting the main perpetrators and the housekeeper, a resident of Ma’alot-Tarshiha.

The suspects’ detention was extended multiple times, and yesterday, following the conclusion of the investigation, a prosecutor’s statement was filed in Acre Magistrate’s Court. The Haifa District Attorney’s Office is expected to file an indictment and a request for detention until the end of proceedings against the housekeeper and the two extortionists this Sunday.

Northern District Commander, Chief Superintendent Meir Eliyahu:
“Extortion is the lifeblood of criminal organizations and gangs. The northern district prioritizes combating protection rackets, with significant operations against criminals and gangs targeting innocent citizens and business owners in recent months.”
