About a week ago, in the heart of Tayibe, a potentially deadly shooting was narrowly averted. Municipal police officers operating in the area spotted a 32-year-old local resident armed with a handgun, seemingly about to open fire on another individual.

The officers moved in to arrest him and recovered the pistol, which he had tossed nearby. But just as it seemed the situation was under control, a furious mob began to gather at the scene and violently attacked the officers.

Suspect escapes
Amid the chaos, the suspect managed to flee with help from others and remained in hiding for several days. Police launched an extensive search and intelligence operation to locate him.

Last night (Thursday into Friday), there was a positive breakthrough: Yamam counterterrorism officers, supported by detectives from the Tayibe police station, raided a building in Qalqilya and arrested the suspect. He was taken in for questioning at the local police station.

“We will reach anyone who raises a hand against police or endangers lives”
Yamam Commander, Deputy Commissioner A., commented on the operation:
“Yamam, the Israel Police’s elite special operations unit, operates with determination and a high level of professionalism—not only in the fight against terrorism, but also against criminal elements that threaten the safety of civilians and security personnel.

We will not allow harm to the rule of law. We will reach anyone who raises a hand against police officers or endangers lives, anywhere and at any time. Close cooperation with regional police districts is an integral part of the unit’s daily operations, as part of the Israel Police’s broader battle against serious crime.”
