The United States, France, Britain, and Germany have submitted a draft resolution against Iran to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the French news agency AFP reported yesterday (Tuesday).
According to Western diplomats, the move aims to increase pressure on Iran due to its “failure to meet nuclear commitments.”
Iran not cooperating
The draft, obtained by AFP, states that Iran is violating its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and stresses the urgent need to correct the situation.
The draft further states that Iran has refused to fully cooperate with the agency, despite repeated requests and multiple opportunities. It also raises concerns about the IAEA’s inability to confirm the “peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program,” as worded in the document.
The draft also expresses concern that Iran has failed to explain the origin of nuclear material found at undeclared sites. It cites the agency’s most recent report, from May, which states that Iran has not provided adequate cooperation and has even attempted to conceal evidence.
According to diplomatic sources, the report includes allegations of evidence being erased and a lack of “credible” explanations from Iran. These activities relate to Iran’s secret nuclear work in the period before the 2000s.
Nuclear talks entering final stage
U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the growing tension with Iran in an interview with Fox News last night, saying the Iranians are becoming “much more aggressive” in negotiations.
“Iran is behaving very differently in the talks than just a few days ago,” Trump said in the interview. “Much more aggressive. It surprises me. It’s disappointing, but we’re scheduled to meet again tomorrow — we’ll see.”
Regarding the continuation of talks on a new nuclear deal, Trump said a meeting with Iranian representatives has been scheduled for Thursday. However, Iranian officials clarified today that talks would not begin until Sunday. They said the meetings will take place in Oman, which is serving as a mediator between the parties.
