Veteran IDF Commander Amir Baram to Lead Defense Ministry

The government has approved the appointment of Maj. Gen. (res.) Amir Baram, former Deputy Chief of Staff, as Director General of the Ministry of Defense | Baram is considered one of the IDF’s most experienced and influential officers

The government today (Sunday) approved Defense Minister Israel Katz’s proposal to appoint Maj. Gen. (res.) Amir Baram, former Deputy Chief of Staff of the IDF, as the new Director General of the Ministry of Defense. Baram is expected to officially take up the position tomorrow following a formal handover.

Defense Minister Katz welcomed the appointment, saying:
“I have decided to appoint Amir Baram as Director General of the Ministry of Defense. He is an outstanding commander and warrior who has dedicated his life to Israel’s security. At a time when our defense establishment is facing significant challenges, Baram will make a vital contribution to strengthening the IDF and ensuring its operational success.”

37 years of operational experience

Baram (55) is regarded as one of the most seasoned and influential officers in the IDF. Among his key roles: Commander of the Paratroopers Reconnaissance Unit, Commander of the Paratroopers Brigade, head of Division 98 and Division 91, Commander of the Northern Corps, and Head of the Northern Command. In October 2022, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff and was responsible for shaping the IDF’s force-building strategy for the next decade.

“Committed to continuing security efforts”

In addition to his extensive operational background, Baram brings in-depth expertise in procurement, weapons systems, and the Israeli defense industries, as well as strong strategic ties with international partners—foremost among them, the United States. In his most recent position, he played a key role in managing critical IDF procurement programs and was involved in budgetary decisions and international defense cooperation.

Baram commented after the decision:
“I consider this role a great honor and a tremendous responsibility to continue advancing Israel’s defense. I will continue working with determination to safeguard the security of the State of Israel, in close cooperation with the IDF and the entire defense establishment.”

Personal background and education

Baram resides in central Israel, is married, and has three children—two of whom serve in Israel’s security forces. He is a graduate of the IDF Command and Staff College, the Royal College of Defence Studies in London, holds a bachelor’s degree in law from Reichman University, and a master’s degree in international relations from King’s College London.
