Chairman of the National Unity Party Benny Gantz, whose views often diverge from the government’s, expressed clear support for the decision to maintain IDF forces in southern Lebanon. “The IDF must not withdraw from the buffer zone in Lebanon. It must continue and even intensify its actions against any Hezbollah violations, whether minor or severe,” Gantz stated. “We must ensure Lebanon fully upholds its obligations under the agreement.”
A Clear Message to Israel’s Adversaries
Gantz emphasized that northern residents need to trust the government’s commitment to their safety over concerns about neighboring Lebanese villages.
“We must insist on the security of northern residents and ensure the threat to their communities does not resurface. Otherwise, we’ve learned nothing from October 7,” Gantz added.

Opposition Leaders Echo Support
Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu Party, also voiced support, saying, “The IDF cannot leave Lebanon. The Lebanese side has violated the agreement. There is no real deployment of the Lebanese army along the border, nor is it capable of controlling or disarming Hezbollah. Withdrawal under these conditions would be a grave mistake, endangering the residents of northern Israel.”

National Unity on Security Issues
Gantz’s statement, along with similar calls from other opposition leaders, highlights a rare moment of national unity on security matters. The joint demand to keep IDF forces in southern Lebanon and ensure full enforcement of the agreement sends a strong message: Israel will stand firm on all terms to safeguard its security.
