Amid ongoing nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, CNN reported overnight (Tuesday to Wednesday) that, according to intelligence obtained by U.S. sources, Israel is preparing for a possible strike on Iran’s nuclear sites.
Disagreement in Washington
According to American officials, an Israeli strike on Iran could be perceived by President Trump as an especially aggressive move, potentially triggering a broader regional escalation—something Washington is eager to avoid. However, the sources noted that Israel has not yet made a final decision, and there is disagreement within the U.S. administration over the likelihood of such an operation. In their assessment, the final decision will likely depend on whether negotiations between the two countries succeed or collapse.
Another source familiar with the American intelligence assessments said the chances of an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities have risen significantly in recent weeks. He added that if an agreement is signed between the U.S. and Iran that does not mandate the complete removal of Iran’s uranium stockpiles, it would further increase the likelihood of Israeli military action.

Applying Pressure on Iran
The U.S. assessment is based not only on public statements. The source noted that in recent months, Israel has significantly stepped up its preparations for a potential strike on Iranian nuclear sites. Paradoxically, the prospect of a deal that fails to include the full evacuation of enriched uranium could push Israel to take military action.

Still, some believe this buildup may be intended to apply pressure on Iran. According to assessments, Israel aims to send a strong warning and signal the potential consequences if Tehran does not retreat from key elements of its nuclear program.
CNN noted that it had contacted the Israeli National Security Council and the Prime Minister’s Office for comment. As of now, Israel’s embassy in Washington has not responded.

Stepping Up Intelligence Gathering
CNN also reported that the U.S. is increasing its intelligence-gathering efforts to prepare for the possibility of an Israeli military strike. Still, a source close to the Trump administration clarified that the chances of direct American involvement in such a strike are currently very low—unless Iran engages in a clear and provocative act.
Another security source pointed out that Israel currently lacks certain capabilities needed to completely destroy Iran’s nuclear infrastructure on its own, due to limitations such as aerial refueling and the challenge of penetrating underground facilities.
Another round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran is expected to take place in Europe in the coming days. However, according to CNN, the U.S. has not yet submitted an updated proposal approved by President Trump.
