The Trump administration continues to advance measures against higher education institutions across the U.S. that hosted anti-Israel demonstrations and have been fertile ground for antisemitism over the past 17 months. The U.S. Department of Education announced that no fewer than 60 universities nationwide, including elite institutions such as Ivy League members, will be subjected to special oversight that will closely examine their conduct; failure to comply could lead to the withdrawal of large federal funding.

This move follows the U.S. government’s previous actions against Columbia University in New York. In recent months, the university has hosted some of the most heated demonstrations against Israel, including displays of violence and clear antisemitic indicators. As a punishment, the Trump administration has withheld grants worth hundreds of millions of dollars from the university. Additionally, the immigration office has begun proceedings to expel a Palestinian student who was a leader of the demonstrations at the university over the past year.
Root of the Problem: Antisemitism
Trump’s measures have already begun to affect the universities, with some announcing a freeze on efforts to recruit new staff amid the economic uncertainty surrounding the current administration. The hope is that the universities will also take steps against anti-Israel protests, which are at the heart of the crisis. Knesset member Dan Illouz (Likud), chair of the Jewish Students’ Lobby, positively commented on the American government’s actions, concluding that, “An academic institution that does not protect Jewish students should face budgetary and legal consequences.”
