The UK’s anti-Israel Moves Met with Strong Response

The United Kingdom announced Tuesday a set of sanctions targeting Israeli residents in Judea and Samaria, alongside an official freeze of free trade agreement negotiations with Israel, sparking sharp rebukes from Israeli officials.

The UK’s move to suspend trade talks and sanction Israeli citizens drew a swift and severe response from Jerusalem, with Israel’s Foreign Ministry accusing the UK of harboring an “anti-Israel obsession.”

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy declared the sanctions during a speech before Parliament, claiming they were directed at individuals and entities responsible for what he called “serious settler violence.” Among those targeted are prominent activist Daniella Weiss, two unauthorized outposts, two additional organizations, and several construction companies operating in Judea and Samaria. The sanctions include travel bans, asset freezes, and disqualification of company directors.

“Britain Willing to Harm Its Own Economy”
Lammy also announced the suspension of talks for a new trade deal with Israel, criticizing the IDF’s ground operations in Gaza, blaming Israel for blocking humanitarian aid, and reiterating the UK’s demand for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages. He further claimed that Israel’s policies obstruct diplomatic solutions and endanger Palestinian lives.

Israel Denounces UK Decision as Politically Driven
Israel’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the UK’s move as a political maneuver, stating, “Even prior to today’s announcement, the free trade agreement negotiations were not being advanced at all by the current UK government. More than that, the agreement would serve the mutual benefit of both countries. If, due to anti-Israel obsession and domestic political considerations, the British government is willing to harm the British economy — that is its own prerogative”.

Particularly Offensive Timing
The Israeli response also pointed to the painful timing of the sanctions announcement, calling it “unjustified, and regrettable”, noting it coincided with a national day of mourning for Tsala Gez, an Israeli woman shot and killed en route to the maternity ward. Doctors are still fighting to save her newborn.

“These steps reflect a complete lack of understanding of the security reality Israel faces” the Ministry statement read.

“The British Mandate Ended 77 Years Ago”
Concluding the statement, the Foreign Ministry underscored Israel’s sovereignty and resilience: “The British Mandate ended exactly 77 years ago. External pressure will not divert Israel from its path in defending its existence and security against enemies who seek its destruction.”
