The five Thai citizens recently freed from Hamas captivity, Sathin Suwankham, Phongsak Thainna, Banawat Saithiaw, Sariyaon Watchara, and Solasak Lamnao, arrived home in Thailand this morning (Sunday) after completing their rehabilitation at Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) in Israel. Before departing, they bid farewell to the medical teams that supported them throughout their recovery.
Upon arrival in Bangkok, they were joyfully reunited with their families. Four of the hostages’ family members had traveled from Thailand earlier this week to accompany them home, along with a representative from Thailand’s rescue team.
The October 7 kidnapping and their return to Israel
On October 7, along with more than 200 Israelis, Hamas abducted a large number of non-Jewish farm workers from communities near the Gaza border. Many of the kidnapped laborers were Bedouins, Nepalis, and predominantly Thai nationals. It remains unclear why Hamas held foreign hostages for such an extended period. Some analysts suggest the group may have sought to apply indirect pressure on Israel through the hostages’ home countries.
Ultimately, Hamas released most of the surviving hostages, with some freed as part of the initial hostage deal nearly a year ago and others—including these five Thai nationals—released in the latest agreement after approximately 500 days in captivity. Notably, Israel did not provide anything in return for their release.
