Israel and Syria are conducting secret talks mediated by the United Arab Emirates, aimed at “building trust and reducing regional tensions.” This was reported today (Wednesday) by Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the discussions.

According to the report, the communication channel between the two countries was opened following the visit of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to the UAE less than a month ago. The talks, which are focused on security and intelligence issues, are primarily technical in nature and do not include discussions on halting Israeli airstrikes in Syria.

The goal: reducing tensions
Mediation is being facilitated by Emirati intelligence officials, with the involvement of Syrian intelligence officers and former Israeli security officials.

The main objective is to reduce tensions following recent Israeli strikes in Syria, including one that occurred near the presidential palace in Damascus.

The report further states that President al-Sharaa, also known by his pseudonym Abu Mohammad al-Julani, is attempting to send a message of reconciliation toward Israel. As part of this effort, meetings were held with representatives of the Jewish community in Damascus and abroad, and two senior members of Islamic Jihad were arrested. In an official letter sent by the Syrian Foreign Ministry to the United States, it was stated: “We will not allow Syria to become a source of threat to any party, including Israel.”
