Political Shockwaves: Ben-Gvir Threatens to Leave the Coalition

Itamar Ben-Gvir, leader of the Otzma Yehudit party and Israel's Minister of National Security, delivered a decisive statement to the media this evening (Thursday) regarding reports of a finalized deal to release hostages.

Ben-Gvir fiercely opposed the agreement, branding it a “reckless deal.” He claimed the arrangement involves concessions, including withdrawing from the Philadelphi Route, returning militants to northern Gaza, ceasing combat, and releasing hundreds of prisoners. According to Ben-Gvir, this would “erase the gains of the war.” He also warned of severe consequences, including strengthening Hamas and emboldening it to commit another massacre.

Otzma Yehudit to Withdraw from Government if Deal Proceeds

Ben-Gvir declared that if the deal moves forward, Otzma Yehudit will leave the coalition. “If this reckless deal is approved and executed, the Otzma Yehudit party will not remain part of the government,” he stated. However, he emphasized that his party would rejoin the government if combat resumes with the intent of achieving victory and fulfilling the war’s objectives.

Ben-Gvir: Stop All Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

In a broader critique, the minister called for halting all humanitarian aid to Gaza as part of efforts to secure the hostages’ release. “Humanitarian aid to Gaza must stop completely. Not ‘monitor the aid mechanisms,’ not reduce them, but end them altogether,” he asserted. Ben-Gvir argued that the path to defeating Hamas includes “intense military strikes” combined with cutting off Gaza’s fuel, electricity, and water supplies.

Concluding his statement, Ben-Gvir urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reconsider and block the deal’s approval. While committing not to bring down the government or collaborate with the opposition against it, Ben-Gvir maintained that his party could not remain in a coalition that endorses a “deal that grants Hamas a massive reward.”

Likud Responds: “Combat Can Resume with U.S. Backing”

Following Ben-Gvir’s announcement, Likud issued a statement refuting his claims. They emphasized that the proposed deal includes:

– A guarantee to resume combat with U.S. support.
– Access to necessary weapons and military tools.
– Maximizing the release of live hostages.
– Maintaining full control over the Philadelphi Route and the security barrier encircling Gaza.
– Securing dramatic security achievements that will ensure Israel’s safety for generations.
