Also eliminated: Commander of the Rafah Brigade
Sinwar was killed alongside Mohammed Shabana, commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade, in a joint IDF–Shin Bet operation on May 13, 2025, while they were inside an underground command and control center now under IDF control.
During the operation, the bodies of additional terrorists were discovered; their identities are still being verified. In the course of searching the underground route, items belonging to Sinwar and Shabana were found, along with other intelligence materials, which have been transferred for further analysis.

The most senior leader in the Gaza Strip
After the elimination of Yahya Sinwar in October 2024, Mohammed Sinwar assumed leadership of Hamas’s military wing in Gaza. He subsequently became the most senior military figure in the Strip and was considered an undisputed leader within the organization.
How the strike was executed
In the targeted strike, the Israeli Air Force employed dozens of advanced munitions, including bunker-busting bombs, to ensure the destruction of the site.
The attack plan mirrored the method used in the elimination of Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut: the strike targeted all entrances and exits of the underground compound to prevent Sinwar from escaping.
The approach combined direct impact with structural collapse using penetrating bombs, aimed at killing those inside through the initial explosion and subsequent cave-in. In the event any individuals survived the blast, the collapse was intended to cause death by suffocation—believed to be what happened in Nasrallah’s case.
As with the elimination of Nasrallah and his deputy, the IDF continued its assault in the minutes following the initial strike, targeting terrorists attempting to rescue those trapped in the tunnel. This ensured that if Mohammed Sinwar had not died in the initial hit, he would ultimately be killed by suffocation underground.

Progress on the battlefield
In recent weeks, the IDF has dealt a serious blow to the capabilities of terrorist organizations. Among the key achievements was the destruction of a tunnel system beneath the European Hospital, which yielded valuable intelligence, weapons, and command centers.
In addition, the IDF eliminated senior operatives from the Al-Mujahideen Brigades, a terrorist group responsible, among other attacks, for the murder and abduction of the Bibas family on October 7. These targeted killings and strikes have significantly disrupted the leadership and coordination of these organizations.
