Ofri Yacobi, 17, from the Hevel Modi’in Orienteering Club, won a gold medal at the European Championships for girls under 18, held in the Czech Republic. Ofri not only won the 3 km sprint event but did so as the youngest competitor in her category, finishing five seconds ahead of her Latvian and Swiss rivals.

The victory was achieved thanks to skilled map reading, precise route choices, and excellent technical execution in the final stretch. Two checkpoints before the finish line, Ofri accelerated, never looked back, and made history.

Orienteering: Strength, Thinking, and Speed
The sport of orienteering combines high physical fitness, accurate map reading, and real-time decision-making. Competitors run across terrain following a course marked only on a map, and whoever completes it in the shortest time wins.

In Israel, orienteering competitions take place every weekend across the country, and the sport’s community proudly notes that everyone is welcome to join and try. Ofri Yacobi, a high school student entering 12th grade, has become an inspiration for the younger generation in the sport. Photos from the competition show her signaling victory with her hands, lifting Israel’s team into moments of pride and joy.
