The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), along with Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and Border Police, launched a broad counterterrorism operation today (Monday) in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, a hotspot for militant activity in the region. “Iron Wall,” as the operation is named, aims to dismantle terrorist networks in the region. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, two fatalities and 35 injuries have been reported so far.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the operation, emphasized its strategic importance: “This is another step toward achieving our goal—strengthening security in Judea and Samaria. We are systematically and decisively fighting the Iranian axis wherever it reaches: Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and here in Judea and Samaria.”
“The Threat is Growing”
Shortly before the operation was announced, Defense Minister Israel Katz hinted at upcoming action during a meeting of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. “The threat to settlements and residents in Judea and Samaria, as well as along the Seam Zone (border towns), is becoming increasingly severe,” Katz said.
Katz highlighted the role of the Iranian axis in funding, arming, and directing terror activities in Judea and Samaria. “Our enemies see this as a uniquely open front, and the Iranian axis continues to exploit it. I have instructed the IDF to act decisively to protect our communities and residents, and to carry out powerful strikes to prevent terror,” he added.
Preparing for Expanded Operations
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi recently emphasized the need for readiness in the West Bank: “In addition to bolstering defenses in the Gaza Strip, we must prepare for significant operations in Judea and Samaria in the coming days to preemptively stop terrorists before they reach our citizens.”
A message sent to residents of Judea and Samaria by the Etzion Regional Brigade operating in the area, underscored the military’s heightened preparedness: “Given the complex security situation anticipated in the near future, the brigade is reinforcing defensive and offensive measures. Forces are actively operating in villages and cities, working to thwart terror, disperse riots, and ensure security on roads and in communities. We are aware of the tension residents are experiencing and will continue to do everything in our power to provide maximum security.”
