In recent months, the IDF has appointed an officer with the rank of captain to serve as the military attaché at Israel’s permanent mission to the United Nations. The appointment, made at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marks a significant change for the mission, which until now had no permanent IDF representative.
The attaché’s role is to assist in strengthening international legitimacy for the IDF’s operations in Gaza. As a permanent member of the diplomatic mission, he is tasked with supporting the embassy’s public diplomacy efforts and advancing humanitarian issues being addressed by the UN Security Council.

According to the IDF, the main reason for the appointment is the desire to deepen international understanding of Israel’s positions, particularly regarding its military activity in Gaza, and to help manage incoming inquiries on the topic.

The U.S. veto
Last Thursday, the UN Security Council held a vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, without clearly conditioning it on the release of the hostages. The resolution was rejected after the United States exercised its veto power.

“As long as the hostages remain in Gaza, there will be no ceasefire. Israel will continue applying military pressure and will use every means necessary until all the hostages are returned,” said Israel’s Ambassador to the UN.
