Reuters reported today (Wednesday) that Israel has requested mediators to extend its military presence in southern Lebanon until February 28, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Under the original ceasefire agreement, Israel was set to withdraw its forces by January 26. This deadline was later extended to February 18, and now, according to reports, Israel is seeking an additional extension.

Lebanese Government Shifts Policy on Hezbollah

At the same time, Lebanon’s new government is making a significant policy shift regarding Hezbollah. In a dramatic decision, the government has removed the long-standing phrase “the people, the army, and the resistance” from its official statements. This political doctrine, which had served for years as an official endorsement of Hezbollah’s activities, has been omitted in an effort to assert the Lebanese Army as the country’s sole security authority.

Is Lebanon Seeking Greater Independence from Hezbollah?
Lebanese sources suggest that the decision aims to signal political independence and improve Lebanon’s standing with the international community. However, it remains unclear how this will impact Hezbollah’s influence in the country’s political and security landscape.

Despite these changes, Hezbollah continues to control significant power centers in Lebanon, and any attempt to curb its influence is likely to face internal opposition and strong backlash from its supporters.
