JERUSALEM – In a symbolic move timed with Jerusalem Day, the Israeli government approved a new initiative on Monday to encourage foreign embassies to relocate to Jerusalem. The plan, jointly spearheaded by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Meir Porush, includes financial support, housing solutions, and logistical assistance for countries interested in recognizing the city as Israel’s capital in practice—not just in principle.
Multi-Year Investment and Strategic Coordination
The program includes a multi-year funding and planning framework, bringing together the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Jerusalem Affairs, Finance, the National Planning Directorate, and other agencies. Each country that expresses interest will receive dedicated support to overcome bureaucratic and infrastructure-related hurdles.
This marks a shift from the previous ad-hoc approach, transforming embassy relocation into a national strategic objective.

What’s in the Package?
Participating countries will receive financial assistance for embassy construction and relocation, urban planning and zoning support, housing solutions for diplomatic staff, help in organizing cultural delegations and city-based events, and broader bilateral cooperation initiatives centered in Jerusalem.
Recent Embassies That Have Made the Move
The announcement comes as several countries have already taken steps toward establishing a diplomatic presence in Jerusalem. Fiji is expected to open its embassy in the capital this September, and Paraguay reopened its embassy in December. Additionally, Ecuador launched a new innovation office in the city—serving as an official extension of its embassy.
Leaders’ Reactions: “A National Mission on the International Stage”
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called the program a “significant diplomatic step”: “This plan is part of my broader efforts to promote the status of Jerusalem. The incentives and assistance will allow countries to turn their support for Israel into meaningful action.”

Minister Meir Porush added: “We are strengthening Jerusalem not just domestically, but in the international arena. This program will help any country that recognizes Jerusalem as our capital take the final step toward establishing their embassy here.”
