In a historic first, a team of runners with disabilities will participate in the 10K race of the Jerusalem Marathon this week. The team, supported by the Shalva National Center, will dedicate their run to the memory of IDF Major (res.) Eliav Abitbul, who was killed in southern Lebanon during the Swords of Iron War. His family members will join the run in his honor.
Just What Eliav Believed In

Tal Abitbul, Eliav’s widow, shared her feelings during the team’s training sessions:
“It is deeply moving. This shows that anything is possible, when you believe in yourself and others beleive in you. It’s also about equality, and seeing how sheer willpower overcomes obstacles. That’s exactly what Eliav believed in, that anything is possible if you just believe.”

A Marathon with Meaning

The Jerusalem Marathon is considered one of the most unique in the world, thanks to its route through the heart of the ancient city. This year, the participation of the Shalva team, running side by side with Eliav’s family, gives the event deeper meaning: a celebration of resilience, inclusion, and the triumph of the human spirit.
Training and Transformation
Preparing individuals with disabilities for a long-distance race requires a specialized training program, personalized support, and close professional guidance. Thanks to a team of dedicated coaches and strong community backing, the runners overcame challenges and proved that with discipline, partnership, and perseverance, they can take part in world-class sporting events.
Steps Toward Inclusion and Equality
Kalman Samuels, Founder and CEO of Shalva, said: “Every step our team takes in this marathon is not just a personal victory, it’s a message to society that inclusion and equality are more than ideals; they’re realities that we’re building together. They’re showing the world that in our society, every individual- regardless of ability- can dream, achieve, and belong. This is more than a race. It’s a journey of faith, persistence, and community. Thank you to our runners for the inspiration you give us all.”
