In a historic shift in its defense strategy for the Gaza border area, the IDF is doubling its forces and launching a strengthened operational framework to enhance security for local residents, as reported by journalist Almog Boker. In an unprecedented move, two regular divisions will now protect the border instead of one. Additionally, 14 new outposts will be established, and the security perimeter will be tightened.

Under the new arrangement, the Gaza border will be divided into two sectors. The northern sector will fall under the responsibility of the 162nd Division, led by Brigadier General Itzik Cohen, while the southern sector will remain under the Gaza Division, headed by Brigadier General Barak Hiram. The changes include the construction of new outposts along the 65-kilometer border and the tightening of open-fire regulations.

“Never Again”

The security perimeter will be reduced to 700 meters, except for five strategic points where a 1.2-kilometer distance will be maintained. The new open-fire instructions designate the buffer zone as a “kill zone,” where any suspicious activity will result in immediate and decisive fire. This marks a significant change in the operational approach, aimed at providing a swift and resolute response to any potential threat.

Security Officials: Trust Must Be Restored

Security officials in the Gaza border area have heard from senior IDF officers, including Southern Command Chief Major General Yaron Finkelman, that the army is fully committed to restoring security and trust to the region’s residents—trust that was severely damaged during the events of October 7.

The new measures are designed to rebuild residents’ sense of safety and ensure that any incursions or threats are met with an immediate and decisive response. Above all, the heightened presence of IDF forces sends a clear message to residents: your security is our top priority.
