IDF Investigation Finds UN Building Not Marked or Recognized During Strike

Preliminary findings from the incident in Deir al-Balah were presented to Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and UN representatives. The strike targeted a structure suspected of hiding enemy forces: “We regret the unintentional harm to the UN employee and extend our condolences to the family.”

Today (Thursday), the IDF presented the initial findings of its investigation into the death of a UN worker, who was killed by Israeli tank fire on March 19, 2025, in the Deir al-Balah area of the Gaza Strip. The findings were shared with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and representatives of the United Nations.

The structure was not identified as a UN post
According to the investigation, conducted by the IDF’s General Staff Fact-Finding Mechanism led by Maj. Gen. (res.) Yoav Har-Even, the fire was directed at a structure believed to be sheltering enemy forces. The structure was not recognized as a UN post by the unit operating in the area. The strike was carried out by a tank.

“The IDF continues to conduct thorough investigations”
Under the direction of the Chief of Staff, the investigation will be finalized in the coming days once additional material is reviewed. The full findings will be presented to the UN. The IDF expressed its regret over the unintentional harm to the UN employee and extended condolences to the family.

“The IDF continues to conduct thorough investigations aimed at drawing lessons and evaluating additional steps to prevent incidents of this kind,” the military added. The IDF also emphasized the importance of maintaining open and transparent communication with international organizations — including the UN — as part of its ongoing commitment to coordination, accountability, and continuous learning.
