Following weekend claims that “Israel has made the decision to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities,” President Isaac Herzog addressed the issue during a live interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Herzog declared, “There is a huge opportunity to change the trajectory of the Middle East for the better, but there is also significant risk as long as the regime in Iran remains in power and continues its efforts.”
Herzog emphasized that Iran’s influence extends far beyond its borders. “Every proxy we face—whether it’s the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, or groups in Iraq—are supported, funded, organized, directed, controlled, and trained by Iran. They operate day and night, even now, instead of taking accountability, looking in the mirror, and seeing the damage, destruction, and pain they have caused with their barbaric attacks and those of their proxies.”
The president urged global powers to remain vigilant, warning, “I caution the world not to fall into a false sense of optimism but to remain alert and clear-eyed.”

Chief of Staff’s Resignation
Against the backdrop of IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi’s resignation earlier today, Herzog commented, “He is an exceptional hero of Israel who took responsibility—both in his initial statement on October 7 and in his resignation letter—for the IDF’s failure to prevent the horrific attack on October 7.”
Herzog reiterated the need for a thorough investigation into the events of that day and called for a state commission of inquiry. “We are a democracy. Everything is discussed openly. We are a vibrant and dynamic democracy, with all its challenges and problems,” he said.
Hostage Deal
Herzog also addressed the complexities of negotiating the release of hostages, acknowledging the mixed feelings surrounding such deals. “I truly understand those who have reservations and strong emotions because we are releasing cruel and horrific terrorists. That’s the trade-off. We are seeking to free women and children, and in return, we are paying the price by releasing brutal and barbaric terrorists. But we all agree this must be done. Bringing them home is a top priority for the State of Israel,” Herzog emphasized.
President Herzog’s remarks come as tensions in the Middle East escalate, with Israel’s potential military action against Iran and its ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages highlighting the delicate and dangerous balance of regional dynamics.
