A flotilla led by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is sailing toward Gaza, carrying twelve activists and what organizers say is humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians. Departing from Sicily on June 1, 2025, the ship is expected to reach the Gaza coastline by Monday—assuming no intervention.
High Spirits on Board Despite Tensions
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Thunberg described the mood on board as “excellent,” though she acknowledged the risks involved in the mission. She said she felt compelled to act in response to what she calls a “genocide” in Gaza, framing the voyage as a moral obligation.

Israeli Military Braces for Potential Confrontation
In addition to Thunberg, the vessel carries a diverse group of activists, including Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament, and Omar Fayad, a journalist with Al Jazeera. Organizers have stated that they anticipate a confrontation with the Israel Defense Forces and intend to broadcast any such encounter live.

Israel’s Request Denied by United Kingdom
The ship sails under a British flag, and according to The Times, Israel formally requested the UK to intervene and prevent the vessel from entering Israeli territorial waters. The request was denied, with British officials reportedly unwilling to block the mission.
Israeli officials view the flotilla as a deliberate provocation and a potential threat to national security. Authorities have defended their efforts to stop such missions as necessary to protect Israeli citizens and maintain regional stability.
