Thirty-three years after establishing diplomatic ties, relations between Israel and Azerbaijan continue to strengthen, with expanded cooperation across key sectors such as agriculture, transportation, and technology. In recent weeks, the Muslim-majority nation closest to Iran has taken additional steps to deepen its partnership with Israel.
“One of Israel’s Key Strategic Partners in the Middle East”
Azerbaijan’s Minister of Transport, Rashad Nabiyev, arrived in Israel today (Monday) for an official visit, during which he was presented with some of Israel’s most advanced innovations—particularly in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles and aerial infrastructure. Israel remains a global leader in this domain.
With the flourishing of diplomatic relations in recent years, Azerbaijan has become one of Israel’s most important strategic partners in the Middle East. In addition to supplying around 35% of Israel’s oil needs, the two countries also maintain close cooperation in agriculture, technology, and defense.
Historic Agricultural Exports Begin
Following decades of economic, defense, and scientific cooperation, Israel has now begun exporting fresh produce to Azerbaijan for the first time. The initial shipments include mangoes, avocados, and peppers—marking the first agricultural exports since diplomatic ties were established in 1992.
The agreement came after thorough consultations with Azerbaijani authorities and includes strict phytosanitary standards to ensure the quality of the shipments. This development presents a significant opportunity for Israeli farmers, particularly in areas like the Gaza border, the Galilee, and the Arava, which have faced challenges during the ongoing conflict.
New Bridges for International Cooperation
Minister of Transport and Road Safety Miri Regev welcomed the Azerbaijani minister’s visit and praised the growing partnership: “Azerbaijan has been a strategic ally of Israel for 33 years. We are proud to deepen these ties, which will allow us to expand collaboration in vital areas such as cyber, smart transportation, and drone technology.”
Ministry Director-General Moshe Ben Zaken added: “The new agreements with Azerbaijan will open up new opportunities for Israel—in both agriculture and cutting-edge technologies. This growing partnership will play an important role in strengthening Israel’s economy.”
