Former Ambassador Dermer Heads to Washington to Advance Hostage Deal

Amid ongoing negotiations with Hamas, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer is traveling to Washington to promote a deal for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza.

Dermer’s visit comes ahead of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s anticipated trip to the U.S., with the Trump administration hoping to see an end to the fighting in Gaza while ensuring Israel’s security interests are upheld prior to the Prime Minister’s arrival at the White House.

Potential for Normalization
Trump is aiming not only to end the war in Gaza and secure the hostages’ release but also to initiate a broader regional shift — including progress with countries like Syria. There is also the possibility that additional nations, such as Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, could join the normalization process if a resolution to the war in Gaza is achieved.

The main focus of the talks in Washington will be the hostage deal. This remains a top priority for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has emphasized that “the first phase of this campaign is to rescue the hostages.” Dermer is expected to present a framework that includes the release of 10 live hostages and 15 bodies, as well as Israel’s conditions for ending the war — including the demilitarization of Gaza.

Hamas Opposition
Talks are also centering on Hamas’s ongoing resistance to the proposed terms. Senior officials in Jerusalem have stressed the need to end the war under conditions that include disarming Hamas and securing the surrender of its leadership, otherwise Israel remains under threat of a repeat of the October 7 style terror attacks. These demands have so far been rejected by Hamas, complicating efforts to reach a deal.

Decisive Outcome Against Hamas
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Netanyahu continues to assert that Israel’s goals include not only returning the hostages but also achieving a decisive outcome against Hamas. Speaking yesterday at an ISA facility, Netanyahu stated there are “many objectives” in this war, but the return of the hostages and victory in Gaza are Israel’s top priorities. “We will accomplish both of these missions, and then we can begin talking about broader regional possibilities,” he said.
