Families of the Hostages Mark Memorial Day in Unresolved Grief

This year’s Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror is observed in the shadow of the ongoing effort to bring all the hostages home—including those who were murdered on October 7 or died in Hamas captivity and have yet to be laid to rest in Israel.

This Memorial Day is unlike any other. Since the October 7 massacre, hundreds of new names have been added to the list of the fallen—soldiers, civilians, and members of Israel’s security forces. Alongside the victims who have been buried are still dozens of hostages who have not returned: some were abducted alive from the Gaza border; some were captured in battle around the Gaza envelope; and others—both soldiers and civilians—were killed and whose bodies remain in Hamas’s hands.

Remembering—Even Without a Grave
On this day, as the people of Israel unite to remember the fallen, many families are left without a headstone to mourn by, without a grave to visit. This year, Memorial Day is not only a time of sorrow for those who are gone—but also a sustained cry for the return of those who have not yet come home. For many families, grief remains suspended—waiting, burning, unresolved.
