At exactly 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, as a two-minute siren echoed across Israel in honor of Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror, El Al joined in from above. Onboard its flights, El Al service managers announced a moment of silence—and passengers stood, many with eyes closed, emotionally connected to Israel from afar.
“Dear passengers, today we mark in Israel the Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Hostile Acts,” said the announcement over the loudspeaker. “Since October 7, many more families have joined the circle of bereavement, having lost what was dearest to them. Each one a whole world—and the pain is unbearable,” the crew added.

Pausing to mourn
“We bow our heads in memory of the fallen, embrace the bereaved families, and take a moment to grieve, to connect, to honor and remember. During this flight, at 11:00 a.m. Israel time, a two-minute siren will sound in memory of the fallen. You are invited to join us by standing at your seats.”
Video footage shared from the flight captured a rare and powerful image: total silence on a commercial airliner. Passengers stood—some with hands clasped, others with closed eyes, and a few visibly in tears. Even in the skies, it seems, one can stand for the siren.
