Deputy Chief of Staff Resigns: IDF Considers Candidates

In a significant development, Major General Amir Baram, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), has announced his intention to step down from his position at the end of February 2025.

Baram’s decision comes after a 2.5-year tenure extended due to the escalation of war, during which he stated he has “reached the limits of his current role.” The IDF is now exploring an unusual solution to fill this critical position amidst political and operational challenges.

Baram’s Statement
In his resignation letter to IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, dated December 30, 2024, Baram explained: “Several months ago, at your request and in coordination with the Minister of Defense, I extended my tenure by six months (until February 2025) due to the intensified war effort. Traditionally, the tenure of the Deputy Chief of Staff is two years. Now that the war’s intensity has significantly decreased, I feel that my capacity to contribute in this role is limited. Additionally, I have no intention of serving a three- or four-year term (a double tenure). Therefore, I request to conclude my service at the agreed date. Naturally, I remain willing to serve in any role required in the defense establishment in the future.”

A Leadership Void Complicated by Political Stalemate
Baram’s departure poses a challenge for the IDF, particularly as Defense Minister Israel Katz has frozen all senior military appointments. This situation could lead to an unusual decision to appoint an interim Deputy Chief of Staff—a rarity in the IDF’s history. Senior military officials have indicated this option is under serious consideration.

Leading Candidates for the Position
Prominent names being considered to replace Baram include:
Major General Uri Gordin – Current Commander of the Northern Command.
Major General Tamir Yadai – Former Commander of the Ground Forces.
Major General Eyal Harel – Head of the Planning Directorate.
Major General Rafi Milo – Commander of the Home Front Command.

The leading candidate is believed to be Gordin, but no final decision has been made due to the political freeze on appointments.

IDF’s Official Response
An IDF spokesperson confirmed Baram’s resignation and its potential implications:
“The Deputy Chief of Staff has requested to conclude his role by the end of February 2025, after extending his service from two to two-and-a-half years at the Chief of Staff’s request during the war. The Chief of Staff and the Deputy discussed the matter, and the Chief expressed deep appreciation for the Deputy’s significant contributions during the war and beyond. The Deputy Chief of Staff is prepared to take on any role as needed.”

As the IDF navigates this leadership transition, Baram’s decision underscores the evolving challenges faced by the Israeli military amid political and operational pressures.
