A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India crashed earlier today (Thursday), just minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India.
The flight was headed to London’s Gatwick Airport. On board were 242 people: 217 adults, 11 children, two pilots, and 10 crew members.

Distress call issued moments after takeoff
According to the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the plane took off at 13:39 local time. Shortly afterward, the flight crew transmitted a distress signal to the control tower. Moments later, all communication with the aircraft was lost.
The plane crashed into a residential neighborhood near the airport. Local media reported that it struck a building that serves as a doctors’ residence. Injured individuals were seen being evacuated by ambulance and stretcher, though there has not yet been official confirmation on the number of casualties.
Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, stated that it is aware of the reports and is investigating the incident. Following news of the crash, Boeing’s stock fell by 6.8%. Air India announced it will continue to update the public as more details become available.
