Jerusalem is celebrating Shushan Purim today (Sunday), the day Purim is traditionally observed in walled cities. As every year, the capital’s streets are alive with costumed revelers, vibrant street performances, and family-friendly community events. This year’s celebrations had a special touch with the “United Purim” parade, drawing thousands of participants to the main event, brimming with color and joy. The atmosphere in Jerusalem blends tradition with contemporary culture, making the city a hub of festivities attracting visitors from all over the country.
A Record Turnout for “United Purim”
Around 70,000 people joined the “United Purim” parade in Jerusalem, which has become a beloved city tradition. The event, organized by the Jerusalem Municipality in collaboration with the Train Theater, serves as the main highlight of the capital’s Purim celebrations.
Over the past two days, approximately 150,000 people have celebrated in the city, enjoying dazzling street performances, colorful parades, and an overwhelmingly festive atmosphere.
A Parade of Unity and Resilience
Leading the parade was Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, alongside families of former hostages and captives, including Karina Ariev, a survivor of captivity; Danny Elgart, brother of the late Itzik Elgart; Yoav Engel, father of freed hostage Ofir Engel; Shlomi Hajaj, uncle of Rom Braslavski; and Dan Entebi, father-in-law of the late Uriel Baruch.
International-Style Festivities in the Heart of Jerusalem
The parade was a mesmerizing spectacle featuring giant puppets, colorful street performances, dance troupes, orchestras, and international circus acts brought in from the Czech Republic. Some of the standout displays included a roaring lion symbolizing peace, a giant turtle representing the journey home, a magical children’s carousel, a flock of soaring birds symbolizing hope, and dozens of fantastical characters transforming the streets of Jerusalem into the country’s largest open-air theater experience.
Along the parade route, seven music stages were set up, featuring performances by various artists and musical ensembles, including “Shaman Shaman,” the Jerusalem Wind Orchestra named after Eitan Avitsur, the Itai Ben-Nun Quintet, and the Besarabia Bar. One of the main highlights was the contemporary circus act by the BoCirk Company from the Czech Republic, captivating audiences with breathtaking acrobatics.

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion summed up the event, saying: “The ‘United Purim’ parade is a celebration of Jerusalem – a city of tradition, culture, and communal unity.” He continued, “This year’s parade was a powerful expression of joy and solidarity, made even more meaningful given the challenges of our times. The residents, visitors, and families once again demonstrated that Jerusalem is the beating heart of Israeli culture – a city of strength, hope, and unity.”
The mayor extended his gratitude to all event organizers: “I want to thank all our partners who made this celebration possible and invite everyone to continue celebrating Purim in Jerusalem. Happy Purim!”
