Birdwatcher’s Delight as Israel’s Migration Season Peaks

Thousands of birds are now soaring across Israel’s skies each day as part of their epic journey north—and JNF teams are preparing the landscape to welcome both the winged travelers and the many people eager to see them. For birdwatchers, nature lovers, and families alike, now is the perfect time to grab your binoculars and head outdoors.

Every spring, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds travel from Africa to their nesting grounds in Europe and Asia. Situated along one of the world’s most important flyways, Israel becomes a spectacular corridor of avian activity—especially during this peak season.

According to the Jewish National Fund (JNF), the migration is now in full swing. During the daytime hours, observers throughout the country can expect to spot large species like storks, pelicans, cranes, and birds of prey gliding overhead.

These remarkable birds are capable of covering between 300 to 500 kilometers per day, depending on wind and weather conditions.

A Season Full of Surprises
JNF field teams at Hula Lake Park have been hard at work preparing the area for migrating and nesting birds. Their efforts include constructing special nesting walls for bee-eaters, placing dry perches for easier birdwatching, creating seasonal pools for waders and songbirds, and expanding wetland areas to support ducks and smaller species.

“Spring migration is always full of surprises,” said Inbar Shlomit Rubin, site manager at Hula Lake Park. “We never know exactly who will arrive or when—but every flock brings excitement and joy.”

Yaron Charka, JNF’s chief ornithologist, invited the public to witness the phenomenon:
“This is the perfect time to enjoy a truly extraordinary migration season.”
