Airstrike Near Syrian Presidential Compound Signals Red Line Over Druze Threats

Amid growing attacks on Syria’s Druze community, the IDF launched an airstrike near a key compound. Defense Minister Katz: "We will not allow threats to the Druze—this is a red line."

In a forceful response to recent violence targeting Syria’s Druze minority, the Israeli Air Force conducted a precision airstrike overnight near the presidential palace compound of Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa in Damascus.

A Clear Message to Syrian Regime
The Israeli government confirmed the operation Friday morning in a joint statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz: “Israel carried out a strike near the Syrian presidential compound last night. We will not allow hostile forces to move south of Damascus or pose any threat to the Druze community.”

Katz emphasized that Israel’s commitment to protecting the Druze in Syria stems from the profound bond between Israel’s Druze citizens and the state. “We owe it to the Druze community—both in Israel and in Syria. Their loyalty and contribution to Israel’s defense are unmatched,” Katz added.

Background: Sectarian Violence Ignites Tensions
The strike follows growing reports of attacks on Druze civilians in the Damascus suburbs, sparked by sectarian unrest. The violence was triggered by a provocative audio clip circulating online that insulted the Prophet Muhammad—sparking outrage among Sunni groups.

Although the Druze community disavowed the clip, jihadist militias aligned with the Julani regime reportedly turned their anger toward Druze populations in the area. “If the assaults on the Druze do not cease, we will respond with great severity,” warned Katz in a direct message to Syrian leadership.

Druze Soldiers Urge Action—and Offer to Cross the Border

Anger spilled over into Druze towns across northern Israel, where spontaneous protests blocked major highways including Route 6 near Elyakim Junction, Kabri Junction, and Ammiad Junction. Tires were set ablaze and traffic came to a standstill. Meanwhile, hundreds of Druze IDF soldiers—both active-duty and reservists—formally petitioned the government for permission to cross the border and protect their families in Syria.

“We are ready to fight. Let us defend our people,” one reservist was quoted as saying.

Medical Evacuations from Syria to Israel
In recent days, the IDF has also evacuated wounded Syrian Druze civilians to hospitals in Israel for medical treatment. These operations have taken place quietly but underscore the urgent humanitarian situation on the ground.

“The Prime Minister and I have directed the IDF to carry out preemptive warning strikes and send a clear message to the Syrian regime: you are responsible for the protection of minorities within your territory,” Katz stated.
