At the direction of Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, a military-wide safety stand-down was declared today (Sunday) across all IDF units, following a series of serious safety incidents in recent weeks. The announcement was first reported by Kan Reshet Bet.

The incidents that led to the decision
Among the incidents that prompted the unusual move: an accidental discharge from a MAG machine gun inside a Namer armored personnel carrier; a soldier stepping on a landmine during an operation in the north; a Namer APC falling into a ditch; a soldier falling into a water pit; and additional cases of accidental discharges of both shells and bullets.

The stand-down is expected to continue through tomorrow. During this period, all units will conduct briefings, investigations, and in-depth learning sessions. The IDF stressed that holding a safety stand-down—especially in the midst of active conflict and intense operational engagement—is “a vital value in preserving the lives of our female and male soldiers.”

The helicopter crash
In a tragic incident last September, Master Sergeant (res.) Daniel Alush and Master Sergeant (res.) Tom Ish-Shalom were killed when a Yanshuf (Black Hawk) helicopter they were flying in crashed near the Philadelphi Corridor in Rafah, while en route to a rescue mission. Seven other soldiers were injured in the crash, four of them seriously.
