Following the Israeli Navy’s swift takeover of the Madleen vessel, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced Monday that the 12 activists on board—including climate activist Greta Thunberg—will be deported back to their home countries in accordance with diplomatic protocols and immigration regulations.
The yacht, part of the so-called “Freedom Flotilla,” was intercepted by Shayetet 13 naval commandos before reaching Gaza. The operation was executed quietly and without resistance, with all activists surrendering peacefully.
Return to Country of Origin Underway
Israeli authorities confirmed that coordination is already in progress for the activists’ return. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that despite media framing, the flotilla was not a humanitarian mission, as claimed by its participants.
“This was a publicity stunt designed to draw attention and provoke political pressure against Israel,” the ministry stated.
Officials noted that the vessel’s cargo included less than what a single aid truck typically delivers, undermining claims of humanitarian intent.
Staged Videos and Pre-Planned Messaging
During the incident, activists released pre-recorded videos suggesting they were “kidnapped in international waters,” urging viewers to “apply pressure for our release.” Israeli officials dismissed the messaging as coordinated propaganda.

Professional Conduct During the Operation
Shayetet 13 forces boarded the yacht overnight in what was described as a precise and professional mission. No injuries were reported on either side. According to the Foreign Ministry, the Israeli Navy acted “with determination and discipline,” ensuring that the flotilla did not reach the shores of Gaza.
