The ship that departed for the Gaza Strip with the stated goal of “breaking the blockade on Gaza” changed its course after receiving a distress signal from another vessel at sea.

The Madleen, carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and six other activists, left Malta on June 1, 2025, headed for Gaza with humanitarian supplies. However, it was forced to divert from its route to assist a boat in distress.

Israel, which closely monitors any vessel attempting to approach Gaza, maintains strict efforts to prevent the smuggling of illegal materials and weapons. According to reports, the Israeli Navy is tracking the Madleen and remains prepared to stop it from nearing the Gaza coast if it attempts to enter the area.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Israel’s security establishment had decided not to allow the ship to approach or anchor off the Gaza shore. It is possible the ship will be escorted by the Israeli Navy to the Port of Ashdod, where the activists may be detained.
