In a moving ceremony attended by Israel’s top leaders, the official state memorial for Ethiopian Jews who perished on their way to Israel is taking place this morning (Monday) at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. The ceremony is held each year on the 28th of Iyar—Jerusalem Day—and serves as a national occasion of remembrance, recognition, and tribute to the journey undertaken by the Beta Israel community on their path to Jerusalem, during which approximately 4,000 people lost their lives.

A Journey of Faith
The state ceremony reflects the State of Israel’s formal recognition of the unique journey taken by Ethiopian Jews, who set out on foot through Sudan—driven by their deep faith. Many of those who died were buried along the way, far from their new homeland, sometimes without identification and without a proper funeral.
