Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir delivered an emotional address today (Monday) at the “Salute to the Fallen and National Flag Laying” ceremony, held at Israel’s National Memorial Hall on Mount Herzl. The ceremony was attended by bereaved families and members of Israel’s security forces. Zamir honored the memory of IDF soldiers and victims of terror attacks, while delivering a message of strength, determination, and unity.
The Fight for Our Existence Didn’t Start Yesterday — and Won’t End Tomorrow
In his remarks, the Chief of Staff spoke about centuries of sacrifice and struggle, from the days before the founding of the state to the fallen heroes of the current war.
“The existence, independence, and security of the State of Israel were never to be taken for granted,” said Zamir. “On October 7th, we all felt this deeply — when a cruel and merciless enemy forced upon us a brutal war.”

The Chief of Staff reaffirmed the deep commitment to continue in the path of the fallen, guided by the values of comradeship, responsibility, devotion, and courage.
“As we look today at each headstone and grave,” he said, “we must remember that alongside our grief for their loss, we carry pride in the independence of our nation.”
Returning the Hostages — Our Moral Mission
Zamir also shared the words of bereaved mother Sarit Zussman, whose son, Staff Sergeant (res.) Ben Zussman, fell in battle in Gaza: “Am Yisrael Chai — the people of Israel live! With heads held high… Be strong, have faith, insist on goodness — we will prevail!”
The Chief of Staff stressed: “We will win for the sake of the fallen, and for the security of Israel.”

Zamir reiterated that alongside the defensive battle, the IDF has a solemn duty to bring home the hostages held in Gaza: “This is the true test of our role as the Israel Defense Forces. It is a mission for all of us.”
He concluded by urging the IDF to continue serving as a moral and social compass during turbulent times, and to safeguard the cohesion of Israeli society: “The IDF will remain a steady anchor, a secure foundation, and a source of trust for all of us,” he said.
