Mossad Director David Barnea is expected to meet soon with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani—his first such meeting since being removed in February from his position as head of the negotiating team for the release of the hostages. While the date of the meeting has yet to be announced, it marks a significant diplomatic development against the backdrop of renewed mediation efforts for a hostage deal.
An effort to revive dormant diplomatic channels
Barnea’s meeting with this senior Qatari official—who holds key regional ties—may signal an attempt to revive diplomatic channels that have been stagnant in recent months, and to bring the issue of the hostages back to the forefront of the international agenda.

At the same time, the IDF is clarifying its message: Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir emphasized earlier today, during a visit to the Gaza Strip, that if there is no progress on the hostage issue, military operations will intensify.
“We will escalate our operations to a more forceful and meaningful level until we reach a resolution,” he stated.

The Chief of Staff continued to condemn Hamas, saying:
“Hamas is responsible for starting the war and for the severe situation of the civilian population in Gaza. It is cruelly holding the hostages and is misreading both our intentions and our resolve.”
