In a major milestone for Israel’s southern periphery, a new, cutting-edge eye care center was inaugurated last Thursday at Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon. The festive ceremony was attended by Dr. Hagai Frenkel – Director General of Barzilai Medical Center, Prof. Hezi Levi, Mr. Roni Mahatzri, Rabbi Yaakov Avitan, Dr. Eyal Aloni, members of the hospital’s leadership, and generous donors including the Ben Yosef family and Dr. Stephanie Becker.
Scheduled to open to the public in early June, the new center is equipped with some of the most advanced imaging technologies available worldwide. Its mission is to dramatically raise the standard of ophthalmology services for residents of the region.
A Full Range of Advanced Treatments
The facility brings together a wide array of services under one roof. It includes dedicated areas for intraocular injections, a specialized pediatric unit, rooms for pre-operative cataract assessments, and surgical suites for minor procedures. Additionally, the center features a professional development complex with a high-tech wet lab designed to ensure top-tier training and ongoing excellence among staff.

A New Standard for Ashkelon
“The opening of this modern and advanced eye center is a source of great pride and benefit for the residents of Ashkelon and the entire surrounding area,” said Dr. Hagai Frenkel. “It allows us to elevate the professional standard—clinically, technologically, and in terms of service—and removes the need for long-distance travel in order to receive top-quality eye care. We’ve made a major investment to bring world-class ophthalmology right here to our community.”

Dr. Eyal Aloni, Director of the Ophthalmology Department, added: “This is likely the most beautiful, advanced, and efficient eye center in Israel. It combines the prestige of a private medical institution with smart and precise public design. It enables optimal treatment, elevates professionalism, and offers a world-class experience for both patients and staff. This center is living proof that in places where others try to destroy—we build. Where light has been taken—we bring it back to the world.”
