A rare expression of support for Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria came this week from a country typically associated with harsh criticism of Israel. A delegation of 15 members of South Africa’s Parliament toured Samaria alongside Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan, and at the conclusion of the visit, openly voiced support for Israeli sovereignty and the Jewish people’s right to settle the land.
The Historical Connection to Jewish Settlement
During the tour, the delegation visited Har Bracha, Mitzpe Yosef on Mount Gerizim overlooking Nablus and Joseph’s Tomb, and the town of Peduel, where they stood at the Donald Trump National Lookout, with views of Tel Aviv, Ben-Gurion Airport, and other central Israeli cities.
Throughout the visit, participants were briefed on the historic Jewish connection to Samaria and the security importance of the area for the State of Israel.

Despite Hostility – Coalition Members Join Tour
As is well known, South Africa led the charge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague with accusations of Israeli war crimes in Gaza. Nevertheless, the visiting South African delegation included members from the ruling coalition.
“I Hope for Peace in the Middle East”
During the tour, the delegation expressed agreement with the extension of Jewish sovereignty in Samaria. Ashley Sauls, head of the Patriotic Alliance, stated: “One of the things that must happen here is sovereignty for Israel in this region. When that happens—there will be hope for true coexistence.”
Sauls added that he hopes for peace in the Middle East soon.
The visiting parliament members also heard testimonies about the events of October 7 and expressed sorrow.
“Our hearts go out to you after what happened on October 7,” said Stephen Wessels, head of the Democratic Christians. He added: “When we stand here, we understand this is not the ‘West Bank’—this is Judea and Samaria. Know that millions of South Africans support you and say: Am Yisrael Chai (The People of Israel Live).”
The tour was led by Yossi Dagan, head of the Samaria Regional Council, who presented the security, historical, and political dimensions of Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria. Dagan emphasized that Israeli sovereignty in the region is a necessary condition for peace and security, stating: “After the October 7 massacre, everyone understands that the path to coexistence and peace runs through strengthening settlements and applying sovereignty.”
