The IDF’s Haredi unit—the Hasmonean Brigade—is preparing to carry out its first operational mission in the Gaza Strip, according to a report by military correspondent Hillel Biton Rosen. The upcoming operation, expected to take place soon, will involve six platoons and two companies from the brigade—marking its official entry into the IDF’s combat rotation.

This move is a major milestone in integrating the Haredi community into the core of the IDF’s operational activity. The participating units have completed extensive training, including intensive drills and a series of professional achievements.

A unique blend of Haredi lifestyle and combat readiness
According to the brigade’s base commander, Lt. Col. Amram Chayon, the unit emphasizes building a strong identity rooted in Torah and values, alongside operational excellence. “A squad commander sits with a soldier in chavruta, discussing values and good character traits. That’s what creates respect—not rank,” he explains.

During fitness evaluations held at the Dekel Battalion, the brigade’s commanders received the highest scores. Both the brigade commander and base commander took part in the training sessions themselves. “Our commanders come from elite units like Sayeret Shaldag. They bring a real sense of mission and exceptional motivation,” Chayon noted.

More than just numbers
The brigade’s first officer training course is already underway, and a new round of recruits will begin basic training in the coming weeks. Lt. Col. Chayon stresses that growth is not just about numbers: “What matters most isn’t the quantity—it’s the spirit. These are Torah-driven soldiers who bring deep values into the heart of IDF combat operations.”
