Major Boost for Reservists as Billions in Grants to Be Issued Pre-Passover

In a welcome development for Israel’s reserve soldiers, the Israeli government announced Wednesday that a major round of financial grants—totaling approximately 5 billion shekels ($1.35 billion)—will be distributed in the coming days, ahead of the Passover holiday.

The grants, originally scheduled for May, will now be disbursed early to around 200,000 reservists who have served in recent months. The announcement came in a joint statement from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Defense Minister Israel Katz.

Smotrich and Katz said in the statement. “These are the heroes who fight for all of us, day in and day out. Advancing the May payment to arrive before Passover is another piece of good news for the thousands serving on the front lines.”

Additional legislative reforms
Alongside the early grant payment, the Knesset has approved a new amendment to Israel’s National Insurance Law. The change, passed in its second and third readings in recent weeks, is designed to prevent independent reservists from accumulating debt due to income discrepancies between their regular work and reserve service.

Under the new law, compensation payments will better reflect actual losses in income during reserve duty. The amendment took effect immediately and is expected to significantly ease the financial burden on thousands of self-employed reservists.
