Eyal Zamir, the 24th Chief of Staff of the IDF, will assume his position today (Wednesday). The official rank-conferring ceremony will take place at the Kirya in Tel Aviv at 11:00 AM. U.S. CENTCOM Commander General Michael Kurilla is expected to attend the official change-of-command ceremony.
A seasoned armored corps officer with a 38-year military career, Zamir’s vision is focused on rebuilding the military following the failures of October 7: restoring IDF strength on the ground and against Iran, and restoring public trust.

Zamir emphasizes the need to strengthen the ground forces and expand the size of the IDF. “The goal is to restore the IDF’s full capabilities, build a formidable ground force, and enhance maneuverability on the battlefield,” said sources close to the new Chief of Staff. Zamir’s plan includes significantly expanding the standing army by adding 10,000 soldiers, 6,000 of whom will serve as combat troops. “The focus is on increasing combat personnel, acquiring advanced equipment and weaponry, and establishing proper training infrastructures,” explained a security source familiar with Zamir’s strategy. This move is designed to prepare the military for future security challenges, particularly against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran.
A Strategic Shift in Gaza
In the Gaza theater, Zamir is expected to implement a significant change in approach. He previously developed operational plans to decisively defeat Hamas, though these plans were shelved by his predecessors. If the IDF is required to return to combat in Gaza, analysts predict a more aggressive and extensive military campaign than those seen in the past year and a half.

Restoring Public Trust and Reforming the General Staff
Zamir places high importance on restoring public trust in the IDF. “The immediate challenge is implementing the lessons from investigations and restructuring the General Staff,” said security officials. As part of this effort, major command changes are expected, particularly in the Southern and Northern Commands.
Preparing for the Iranian Threat and Border Defense
Zamir underscores the necessity of preparing the IDF for a possible strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. “We will reinforce defensive capabilities at the borders, replenish strategic stockpiles, and enhance readiness for dealing with the Iranian threat,” said the incoming Chief of Staff.
On an operational level, Zamir enters the role with a clear strategy. While the political and security leadership agrees on preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear state, Zamir is focused on ensuring that the IDF is prepared for both offensive and defensive operations should the need arise.

Zamir’s Action Plan: Key Steps
- Expanding the standing army: Recruiting 10,000 new soldiers, including 6,000 combat troops.
- Enhancing ground maneuver capabilities: Restoring combat units and regaining operational readiness.
- Preparing for a strike on Iran: Improving aerial and intelligence capabilities.
- Implementing investigation findings: Reforming the General Staff and fostering a new professional culture.
- Building new border defense systems: Investing in security infrastructure, including the establishment of a new missile defense network.
“The IDF Faces a Year of Intense Combat and Major Challenges”
Zamir, the first armored corps officer to hold the position in a long while, brings a fresh strategic perspective shaped by decades of battlefield experience. “The IDF is entering a year of combat and significant tests,” Zamir stated. “We are prepared for every scenario and will do whatever is necessary to ensure Israel’s security.”
Zamir’s appointment received broad support from both the political and military leadership. With extensive experience as the Prime Minister’s military secretary, Defense Ministry Director General, and Southern Command Chief, he now faces the challenge of restoring the IDF’s reputation as a formidable, prepared, and respected military force.
