The five Thai hostages released by Hamas as a ‘bonus’ to the hostage deal last Thursday reunited with their families today (Tuesday), who had traveled from Thailand to Israel to assist them with their needs and accompany them home.

The emotional reunions took place at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, resembling the other hostage release reunions. Yet instead of hearing cries of “Welcome back!” this time, the air was filled with “Yindi Tanrab” – the Thai phrase for “Welcome.”

According to reports, the Israeli hospital ensured the Thai hostages were given traditional Thai food upon reception, providing them with a taste of home while they waited to leave the Middle East.

Hamas’ Failed Attempt at Leverage

Along with over 200 Israelis on October 7th, Hamas kidnapped a significant number of non-Jewish foreign workers from agricultural farms across southern Israel. Some of them were Bedouins, but most were Asian foreign workers primarily from Thailand and Nepal.

It remains unclear why Hamas held these foreign hostages for so long, but it is suspected that the terror group hoped to exert additional indirect pressure on Israel from the hostages’ home countries.

Ultimately, Hamas released most of the surviving foreign hostages; some as part of the first deal a year ago, and others in the recent hostage deal, after being held captive for approximately 500 days, and without Israel providing anything in return.

The names five Thai agricultural workers kidnapped from Nir Oz and Moshav Yesha and released last Thursday are:

Satian Suwanakham (35)
Pongsak Thana (36)
Banawat Sehtao (27) – wounded in his leg

After months of fear and hardship, the freed Thai hostages embraced their loved ones in a tearful reunion of relief and joy. As they prepare to return home, their journey is a testament to resilience and the power of family.
